The amazing “Taking Your Camera on the Road” Lorelle shows you how to instantly translate your blog from English to eight other languages, including Chinese. More languages to come, she states.
She uses the Google’s language tools for the purpose. It’s a fine initiative, but must be taken with not a grain but a spoon of salt.
The ill famed machine translations still have a long way to go, but with a disclaimer that you shouldn’t believe every translated sentence, it has it’s value. The number of language pairs you can translate between is fairly limited and mostly the original language is English. The interest in MT is great of course and a googling for “machine translation” renders around 19,200,000 results, so efforts are made to bring more language border cross overs and better translations. I wish I could write in Swedish and have good translations to other languages, but for now I’ll just have to wait for this to happen.

You are right. The machine translations create some horrible (and hysterical) translations, but they are so much better from last year and the year before and the years before that. They are improving.
Also note, this doesn’t mean your blog will be translated into the language “permanently”. It means that users have an option to read your blog in different languages. It does not mean that search engines will crawl through your blog in that language, storing it in their international databases, so international readers won’t be able to get search results with your blog’s information in tht language. The blog must be written in that language to get picked up by the search engines.
This is merely a service for users who stumble on your pages from a search engine in English (or whatever language) and then have the option of viewing a translated page to help them read it in their own language.
I look forward to the day when these restraints are lifted and all information is available, no matter the language. I think the world will truly become the global village talked about all the time and a better understanding may occur.

I agree to everything you say and it’s a good thing you push for the possibilities to use this AI thingy as it stands. The more people use machine translation, the faster it will develop.
On the search engine side, I think services will emerge on Google and other engines, that use language translation to allow sites in one language to be searched in another.
The future of international exchange of ideas and collaboration looks bright.
