The Flickr Spinnr 0.3 Release Tuesday 2006-05-16
After a intense finishing session I’m happy to announce the release of FlickrSpinnr version 0.3. As before you can download the WP plugin at Headzoo’s place. The new version, as predicted, uses a Flash presentation layer – the cube. Images are fetched from Flickr and presented on a rotating cube. You can see the cube in rotation in the sidebar. A mockup for the upcoming stand alone version for more or less static web sites can be seen in my labs.
[Edit] Well, the coding session was a bit to hot, and we made a mistake. It was not a feature – it was a bug. If you downloaded the Flickr Spinnr version 0.3 before May 19, you may not see the cube. A bug fixed version is ready for you at Headzoo.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Update: Version 0.4 is released, including a new stand alone variant.

Hi — really cool plugin! Is there a version that is independent of Flickr? If it could read thumbnails from a thumbnail directory, for instance, instead of a hard-coded link to Flickr, it seems like it might be easy to modify?
The cube looks awesome — now if only I used Flickr!

Julie: Happy to hear that you like it.
And yes there is a Flickr independent version, although it is not released and it’s not a WordPress plugin. I use it for demonstration purposes on my demo page. Before it can be used for general purposes, the Actionscript in the cube has to be generalized.

hi! flickrSpinnr is pretty cool. I tried it with Wordpress 2.0.2 and got this error:
Warning: in_array(): Wrong datatype for second argument in {path-to-blog}/wp-content/plugins/
flickrspinnr/flickrspinnr.php on line 175
The display of the cube worked, and it correctly fetched pictures from my flickr account, but it displayed the above error on the web page above the flickrspinnr cube.

gary: Thanks! We’ll have to look into this. Headzoo has written the PHP part, and may have clue about what happened here. It may be a matter of PHP engine version. What version of PHP do you use? I’ll make sure to ask him.

No Images for my at all on the sides of this wonderful cube… Am I doing something wrong?

Well, I wouldn’t know.
You’d have to describe a little better what you do.
Please email me.

Petit,
Thanks for creatinh this. I tried to use it just now on my site (www.paulamery.com). Download & installed ok, and then added my flickrid plus tags to it.
No luck – the cube is not showing. I am using Firefox on a Mac if that makes any difference
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul!
Hmm. That sounds odd. Did you follow the instructions for putting it up on your site. do you use the accompanying PHP files?

hi Petit,
Im a UK design uni student looking to use a spinning cube display for our Graduate show. We would need it to word independently of flickr, and are planning to use the “diy atlas glove” interface system, if you know it. Do you recon your program is sutible, we prefer macs but windows or linux are possible. Great bit of software, my hat goes off to you. Zoli

Thanks Zoli for your kind words. No I don’t know specifically that glove interface, so I don’t know how signal will be brought from the glove to the Flash application. If the interface is adapted to emulate mouse interaction, I guess the Flash part ( presentation layer ) of the Flickr Spinnr without flickr would do.
If you want perspective on the cube, I recommend to use a Flash/Actionscript 3D library, as Sandy.
Have a look at http://petitpub.com/labs/media/flash/sandy/
I’ll mail you as well.
