Sandy's Forum _ AS2 1.x versions _ Is Flash Player the best?

Posted by: Jason Davisson Aug 2 2007, 02:05 PM

I found out some time ago that QuickTime could play Flash SWF files. Are Flash Player and plugins the quickest way to play a file created by Sandy? If I use Flex to create the file, is it faster at compiling? Can I play the file from Flex and would that be faster than Flash Player? How good are the projected speed increases for Sandy 2 and 3?

When it's all designed and programmed, it does not matter that's 3D. Unless you use something like Holography or 3D Parallax Viewing, you will only be generating 2D content on a computer screen. The question is, how fast and with what features will Flash continue to grow? Can it rival the big game interfaces or games engines such as W.O.W.?

Is Flash the future of 3D developement for Adobe or is there a better method to create a real-time architecture walkthrough than using 3D is Flash.

I am only asking these questions because I want to devote some time to learning more about Sandy and Actionscript. I want to learn something with a future. I find all this programming and developing to be quite tedious and time consuming. I am not big on coding and this is mostly that, but I find Sandy to be very cool indeed. Should I be learning Java3D, OpenGL, DirectX, or C+ instead of learning Sandy and Actionscript?

Hi,
I'm not sure QuickTime runs Flash player nicely. It should be somehow a kind of integration as navigators do. But I must admit I don't have information on that subject.

Adobe seems to take care of 3D in Flash recently. But we are far from having something fast enough to create some real games etc. Adobe will hesitate I guess between the old macromedia technology : shockwave which has hardware acceleration.

I think that AS3 has a future on the web. It you don't want to create some big 3D games, or really complex stuff, Flash is a good platform from now for many reasons : language easy to learn, API quite simple.

Learning C++ (I come from industrial world, so mainly C language) and OpenGL is much more longer and harder. But i the mean time it allows more things. So I would say it just depend on your goals.

Best
Thomas

If you find programming to be tedious and time consuming, you either need to study it (read a book, take a course, etc.) to improve your productivity, or find a different career. Perhaps you are better suited to 3D graphics using Studio Max. I found 3D drawing tedious, and realized I preferred programming, so I got into that angle of it.

You shouldn't bother with Java3D, OpenGL, DirectX, or C+ instead of ActionScript. They are harder and more time-consuming. The primary issue is playback on the web. In that case, Flash Player is far and away the best choice due to its ubiquity and cross-browser and cross-platform consistency. Nothing else even comes close (95% penetration).
